Birth Mothers

Facing an unplanned pregnancy can cause some people to feel stuck and unable to make critical decisions.  Any woman 16 years old and older may make this legal decision for herself.  We encourage you to discuss your choices with your partner and family for their support if appropriate but we understand that you may not feel able to do that.  We are honored to walk alongside you as you make your decision.  You should never feel forced or coerced to choose one decision over another.  It may be helpful to see your options simplified.  You have basically 5 different choices.  The staff at Adoption Affiliates, Inc. will explain the options but does not presume to know which one is best for you.  Only YOU know what is best for you.  We can help you get clear about what you will do.

Option 1 – Parenting the Child Yourself

Option 2 – Placing the Child with a Family Member

Option 3 – Placing the Child with the Father (or His Family)

Option 4 – Placing the Child for Adoption with an Adoptive Family

Option 5 – Terminating the Pregnancy

Option 1 – Parenting the Child Yourself

We can help you work through any perceived barriers to keeping the baby and parenting yourself.  We will help you explore community resources such as:

  • Health Care Coverage (SoonerCare)
  • Food Benefits (WIC – Women Infant & Children)
  • Housing Options – resources assisting with rent, shelters, transitional living
  • Parenting Classes
  • Child Support Options
  • Transportation Options
  • Budget Setting
  • Baby Items Needed
  • Relationship Issues
  • Mental Health Issues
  • Substance Abuse Issues
  • Domestic Violence Issues
  • Legal Issues

Option 2 – Placing the Child with a Family Member

Do you know of any healthy and stable family members who are willing to take custody of the baby?  We can help you explore this option.  We will help you decide what “health and stable” looks like:  employed, safe home, transportation, no criminal history, clear of substance abuse, generally good judgement.

Option 3 – Placing the Child with the Father (or His Family)

Is the birth father interested in caring for the baby?  Is he stable and able to parent?  Does he have family members who would consider taking the child?

Option 4 – Placing the Child for Adoption with an Adoptive Family

Adoption is both a legal and social services process.  We can guide the expectant parents through the legal and emotional process with confidentiality and sensitivity.  The Adoption Affiliates, Inc. staff will offer support with:

  • Counseling
  • Medical appointments
  • Understanding and completing required paperwork/forms
  • Matching with potential adoptive parents
  • In last trimester, limited financial help for approved pregnancy related expenses
  • Legal advice from the attorney retained by our agency

Option 5 – Terminating the Pregnancy

If you are under 17 years old, you will need to check with the clinic of your choice because you may need to get a parent’s signature or court’s permission for their services.  Most procedures require a $100 deposit in order to make an appointment.  Then a 72 hour waiting period is required between paying the deposit and an appointment.  The remaining balance is due before the procedure.

There are two types of terminations.

Medical Procedure – taking pills to cause the body to release the pregnancy.  This option  is available up until you are 9 weeks and 4 weeks along in your pregnancy.  The cost of this procedure is around $550.

Surgical Procedure – this is a more invasive procedure and can require a one day visit or a two day visit to a clinic depending on how far along you are in the pregnancy.  If you are past 17 weeks pregnant, you will need to travel to other states.  The cost of this procedure is around $575 and goes up with each additional week of pregnancy.
